A Proven Approach
What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?
Medical researchers know how difficult treating addiction is. On average, many addicts go through rehab at least twice before they are on the long-term path to recovery. If you have previously tried rehab and weren’t successful, medication-assisted treatment may be an option for you.
In medication-assisted treatment, clients are under medical supervision and are given medication to reduce the cravings for the drug or alcohol, or it can be used to cause adverse effects to your body if you do take drugs or alcohol. The medication-assisted treatment program has been effective for many clients. It increases the chances that a client will remain on the recovery path and not relapse. It lowers the chances of an overdose as well. It decreases the chances an addict will resort to criminal activity in order to get the drug, which will keep them out of jail. It increases the chances a client will get and keep a job, and it increases the chances for a pregnant client that their baby will be born without adverse side effects.
Tools for Sobriety
What Kinds of Medications Treat Addiction in the Program?
Usually, alcoholics are treated with one of three medications. Acamprosate treats the chemicals in the brain associated with relapsing due to alcohol abuse. Another drug used in MAT, Disulfiram, reduces the urge to drink. Clients may also be given Naltrexone, which reduces the craving for alcohol. All these medications may give you the help you need to continue on your journey to sobriety.
For those addicted to opiates, there are medications such as Naltrexone, Buprenorphine, and Methadone, which can also reduce the effects of opioids after they are taken, or they can help you wean off opiates safely by reducing your cravings for the drug.
A Comprehensive Care Model
How Does MAT Fit Into a Treatment Program?
Medication-assisted treatment does not replace a traditional rehabilitation program for addiction. It is simply one of the tools we use at SCA Recovery to help you in recovery. In addition to medication, you will be involved in a residential treatment program, which means you will be participating in individual and group therapy after undergoing a detox program. You will be assigned a team of social workers, psychologists, counselors, therapists, and others to work with whose sole focus is to help you on the path to recovery.
During your treatment program, you will also be working on making connections with other people, and finding a new purpose for your life beyond addiction. You may choose to participate in music therapy, meditation, yoga, and exercise, or create art as part of your rehabilitation. You can also work with team members to access educational programs or workforce programs to help with employment.
