Power of Community

Why 12-Step?

Addiction can be an isolating experience. By talking with other people in rehabilitation about your experiences with addiction, it is comforting and empowering to know you have people around you who understand. A 12-step Facilitation Therapy program is a social program that forces you to open up to others out of necessity. Surrounding yourself with a community of people who understand your struggle and want you to be successful is one way you can work towards maintaining your sobriety.

One of the most important tenets of the 12-step program teaches you how to think positively. Often, addicts are engulfed by negativity, feeling they will never change, and they will always continue to struggle with addiction. However, the 12-step program envelops you in a group of people who have been where you are, and who accept you the way that you are, right now, all while encouraging you to be your best self.

Core Principles Explained

What Are the Steps in the 12-Step Facilitation Therapy Program?

Although the format of a 12-step program is a bit different for alcoholics than it is for people with a substance use disorder, the central ideas remain the same. You have to first accept that you have a problem with drugs or alcohol. You have to surrender to a higher power or something greater than yourself to get help with your addiction. You also realize that surrounding yourself with people again will help you with your sobriety.

Here are the 12 steps used in the Alcoholics Anonymous Program, which we’ve adapted for our 12-step Facilitation Therapy program.

You must accept that you have a problem with drugs or alcohol that you cannot manage by yourself.

You believe that with the help of a power greater than yourself, you can build your life back.

You agree to give your life and your struggle to the higher power of your choice.

Take a moral inventory of yourself and your life without fear.

Admit to yourself, another person, and God the extent of your addiction.

You must be ready to ask God to remove your failures and character defects.

You must, with humility, ask God to help you with your shortcomings.

You must ask for forgiveness and make a list of amends to people you’ve harmed with your addiction.

You must make those amends to people whenever and wherever possible.

Continue to evaluate where you can improve, and continue to ask for help or forgiveness along the journey.

Continue to pray for guidance from God, and for His help along your path of empowerment.

Offer help to others who are struggling.

While all the steps in this list may not apply to everyone, there is little doubt that it is an effective method. In the nearly 90 years since they were written down, the 12-step program has helped millions of people stay sober. Alcoholics Anonymous usually reports about a 50% success rate in their 12-step programs, with an additional 25% of alcoholics who follow the 12-step program remaining sober after a relapse. SCA Recovery uses the 12-step Facilitation Therapy method as a tool to help our clients ascend out of addiction. If you need more information about our 12-step programs, contact us today.
